Situated on the High Street, under the Edinburgh Woollen Mill shop
and down a small flight of stone steps is one of Skipton's bets
kept secrets - Le Caveau Restaurant.
Though it was once a prison for Craven District's felons and sheep
rustlers, there is now no sign of its previous incarnation and the
locals these days are only too pleased to dine there and enjoy the
atmosphere of this 16th century building with barrel vaulted ceilings,
old beams and stone walls.
Everyone of the loyal staff has worked hard to make Le Cavau a
success and the year 2005 we celebrate our 7th glowing entry in
the 'Which? - Good Food Guide'.
Front of the house manager and partner Brian Womersley
welcomes customers in the cosy bar with the best of Yorkshire hospitality.
Customers can relax and have a drink before ordering from the menu
which changes seasonally 'like a breath of moorland air'
(from the Good Food Guide).
The skilfully chosen wine list ofers exceptional value; most of
the range of sixty plus wines are under £20 a bottle. There
are also six or eight wines available by the glass at less than
£4 a glass.
Chef and partner Richard Barker spends his time
in the kitchen producing dishes that are based on locally sourced
produce albeit with a French flavour.
The lunchtime blackboard menu is great value and might offer such
delights as Oven Baked Fresh Cod with a herb crust and lemon
butter sauce, a Slow Roast Duck Leg on a bed of mash with tarragon
jus, or Chargrilled Fresh Tuna Loin with Provencal vegetables
in a warm basil vinaigrette.
Prices are kept under £10 for main courses including vegetables.
If you are in a hurry you could just opt for the Homemade Soup
of the Day or a Smoked Haddock & Leek Tart served warm
with salad garnish a bargain at £3.75
The evening A LA CARTE menu is supplemented by blackboard specials
which might have Yorkshire Dales Fillet of Beef with wild mushrooms
& thyme, madeira jus, or Fresh Sea Bass with risotto of orange
& fennel. There are mouth-watering desserts, with old favourites
like Richard's Bread and Butter Pudding flavoured with Baileys Creme
Anglais or his Fresh Orange and Cointreau Cheesecake.
Finish off with coffee - Columbian Roast, Cappucino, Latte, Espresso
or a Liqueur Coffee of your choice.
Whether you're just coming for a romantic dinner for two, bringing
a couple of friends or a group of up to 30 Le Caveau has so much
to offer.
